Investment declaration, done properly
The declaration you file in April decides how much tax leaves your salary every month for a year. Getting it wrong does not change your final liability — it just moves the pain to January or to your refund.
Plan my declarationWhat it means
An investment declaration is the statement of intended deductions and exemptions you give your employer at the start of the financial year, so it can compute monthly TDS under Section 192. Proof is collected later, usually in January, and TDS is trued up for the remaining months.
The formula
Monthly TDS = (estimated annual tax on declared position) ÷ remaining months
Declare your regime first, because that determines whether the rest of the form matters at all. Under-declaring means excess TDS and a refund later; over-declaring without proof means a heavy January and February deduction.
Worked example
- Declare ₹1,50,000 of 80C, ₹50,000 NPS and ₹3,00,000 rent in April.
- Monthly TDS drops accordingly through the year.
- Fail to produce proof in January and the employer recovers the shortfall from the final months' salary.
How to use it
- 1Choose your regime first. Compare both before declaring; the choice drives everything else.
- 2Declare only what you will actually do. Proof is required in January, not April.
- 3Keep documents as you go. Rent receipts, premium receipts and investment statements, collected monthly rather than in a panic.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I declare investments but do not make them?
Your employer recovers the shortfall through higher TDS in the final months of the year. Nothing illegal occurs, but January and February salaries can shrink sharply.
Can I change my regime after declaring?
Your employer's TDS follows the declaration, but the final regime choice is made when you file your return. A mid-year change of mind is settled through the refund or additional tax at filing.
What proof is needed for HRA?
Rent receipts, and the landlord's PAN where annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000. Many employers also ask for the rent agreement.
