Tax saving guide for salaried India
Tax saving has an order of operations. Choosing the wrong regime can cost more than every deduction you then chase — so settle that first, and only then work the levers the regime allows.
Quantify my tax savingsWhat it means
For salaried taxpayers the practical levers are: regime selection, the Section 80C umbrella of ₹1,50,000, the additional ₹50,000 NPS deduction under 80CCD(1B), employer NPS under 80CCD(2), health insurance under 80D, HRA exemption under 10(13A), and home-loan interest under Section 24(b).
The formula
Tax saved = deduction claimed × your marginal rate (including cess)
A deduction is worth your marginal rate, not the headline rate — ₹50,000 of NPS saves ₹15,600 at 31.2% but only ₹10,400 at 20.8%. This is why the same advice does not suit every salary.
Worked example
- ₹20L CTC on the old regime with ₹54,000 of unused 80C headroom.
- Filling it saves about ₹16,850 at a 31.2% marginal rate.
- Adding ₹50,000 of NPS under 80CCD(1B) saves a further ₹15,600.
How to use it
- 1Decide the regime. Compare both with your real deductions before optimising either.
- 2Fill statutory headroom. 80C, 80CCD(1B) and 80D have hard caps — reach them before exotic ideas.
- 3Check structure, not just investments. HRA and employer NPS depend on how your salary is built, not what you buy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to reduce tax on salary?
Verify your regime choice, then exhaust employer NPS under 80CCD(2) — it is available in both regimes and costs you nothing if your employer restructures within the same CTC.
Is tax saving worth it on the new regime?
The levers are fewer but not zero: employer NPS under 80CCD(2) still applies, and the ₹75,000 standard deduction is automatic. Investment-linked deductions are what you give up.
How much tax can a salaried person legally save?
It depends entirely on income and structure. The optimizer computes your exact unused headroom by lever and the rupee saving of each, rather than quoting a generic figure.
